What I see is an air attack with anti-aircraft guns firing from the ground. When I said "reminds me entirely too much" I meant it brought up unpleasant thoughts and memories. The more I learn about the carnage of that war, the sadder and more sickened I get.

Take it from us Martians, we have built and fought against planetary defenses in the past. Yes we have used camoflage, but making them mobile is pointless as the cannons are large and heavy, besides the chances of a defense cannon moving fast enough to get out of the way in time are very slim, regardless of weather it's a kinetic, or ballistic projectile, and don't even get me started on energy weapons.

The best way to defend a static cannon (well at least in my opinion), is with a shield, or energy barrier of some sort. Trust me, starship captians hate shielded planetary defences, especially cannons.

Of course, the one problem with static anti-orbital defenses is that not only are they big, obvious and exposed, they are, well, static, and the spaceships in orbit can still hit them from orbit with their own guns. Inevitably the planetary defenses will be picked off one after another, and the invasion forces could then proceed without hindarence.

Planetary defenses are best if they are well camoflaged and mobile, say self-propelled anti-orbital missile launching tracked/wheel/hovercraft vehicles (No energy weapons - the atmosphere would scatter beams into ineffectiveness regardless of how advance they are, and railguns had to be big, with a big hulking powerplant, to throw shells to orbit AND remain lethal), using passive scan to detect ships in orbit without being detected, and fight with the armored warfare equvilant of guerilla tactics - shoot and scoot. Always keep moving, never stay in one place long enough for them to track you down and bomb you from orbit. Even if you get hit, you only lose a few cheap vehicles compare to a big expensive static gun.

Even better if it's a sea-covered world - the oceans would be perfect natural protection against any missile or bomb or laser and still difficult to track. A submarine fleet armed with anti-orbital missiles doing sorties from hidden submarine bases around the planet could hold off an invading space-force for LONG LONG time.

In the end, it's all about what's most cost-effective.

That said, though, this is a nice painting of sci-fi planetary defenses.

Take it as a W-165 Planetary Turbolaser from Star Wars.Powerfull enough to destroy a Star Destroyer class ship in 1 shot.Fires once per 10 seconds. Can be deployed on practicly every type of world.Has about a dozen shield generators and very thick armour.
You can't get into position to shoot at it from obit because you would get blown to pieces and you can't make a ground assult because it is heavily defended. And they have pin-point accuracy.
P.S.By Turbolaser don't think actual lasers think Charged Particle Beams.Much more effective :)

Nice, very interesting.

Though there are other ways to destroy static installations from space besides bombing them from low orbit. Say for example: does the lasers have enough power to intercept, say, multi-hundred kilometer sized planetoid deflected upon the planet? Or perhaps subtle methods e.g. inserted agents performing sabotage.

But I digress. Thanks for the note; I always thought turbolasers are merely lasers. On the subject of particle beams, though, how much more powerful do you think a neutron particle cannon would be compare to the other charged-particle variants we see in Science Fiction?

Well many planet's in SW have Planetary shields that can whitstand Orbital Bombardment for years so there is a good chance it can survive a Planetoid.

Hmmmm well i have no idea but Particle Beams are often used as a Beam type of weapon meaning it does damage for a few uninterupted seconds and they have a very powerfull kinetic punch aside from the energetic damage they cause but i'm afraid i don't know anything about a Neutron Particle Cannon :(
P.S. Blasters,Blaster Cannons,Laser Cannons and Turbolasers all fire Charged Particle Beams but on a much larger scale.Oh and who do you think would win Imperium of Man from Warhammer 40K or Star Wars :)

Ah, that resolves the question.

Neutron particle beams had been mentioned as a more advanced form of particle weaponry, based on gravity manipulation rather than electromagnetic acceleration, with noted greater punch because neutrons are heavier than electrons and protons. A notable example of them comes from "Legend of Galactic Heroes", Japanese Space Opera novel series and 110 episode anime OVA that ran from the late 1980s to 2000.

In an Imperium VS Galactic Empire war, I'll ultimately hand it to Star Wars' Galactic Empire:

The Imperium might (and emphasis on MIGHT) win on the ground, but will lose in space, as the Galactic Empire's imperial navy have superior strategic mobility than the Imperium with their reliable hyperdrive, and maybe tactical mobility as well.

Plus technologically and economically the Galactic Empire is more developed and industrially advanced than the Imperium of Man, which consists of many backward Medieval or Feral worlds and a few Hive worlds, and fewer Forge worlds under control of Techpriests of Mars.

Even numerically the Empire have more to throw at the Imperium - the Imperium is said to have at least a million worlds, hundreds of trillions of Humans, tens of thousands of ships and billions of troops, while the Galactic Empire at its height have 70.5 million member, conquered or colony worlds, quadrillions in terms of population, tens of trillions in terms of troops and millions of ships

On the other hand, there is a possibility that the Imperium would win by default on the virtue of the Empire simply giving up, because the Imperium would be vastly bigger than anything the Empire had ever invaded, and an actual war would end in a bloody stalemate due to the fact that both states possesses vast resources to throw at each other, and the Imperium makes up for its many shortcomings with fanaticism and ruthlessness that would sicken even the Empire.

Finaly someone who agrees and knows SW as well as i do :D
The Imperium is a logistical nightmare it takes years for a Telepathic message to be sent from one Segmentum to the other and even more time for the ships to get there. While SW posseses live communication galaxy wide via the HoloNet and vastly superior and safer FTL travel via Hyperspace.SW can destroy planets more easily too. They can just make droids, clones and enlist normall people and aliens in the army. They also posses far superior technology and unlike the Xenophobic Imperium are willing to learn from their enemy. The Imperium also can't communicate ouside of the range of the Astronomican.
Oh a massive armada of IoM ships numbering in the hundreds of thousands is attacking?Palpatine just conjures a Force Storm and poof every ships is gone and he just reincarnates in a Clone body.
Enemy planets too heavily defended and you don't have the time or resources for a prolonged siege? Just send in a World Devastator or the Sun Crusher.
Even if we put the Imperium in the Crusade Era they would be defeated though i do agree this war would probably last for hundres of years and maybe even millenia.

Simple BDZ (Base Delta Zero) or Orbital Bombardment destroys everything and leaves nothing but a barren rock and the best part is that it can be done by a single Star Destroyer class ship in a day!

Unless you're like me in space empires IV and you have planet guns so freaking huge and powerful that they can blast the enemy to smithereens WAY before they get you in range, but I see your point.  Never underestimate the advantage of mobility.

Couldn't help but stare at it imagining the scene in motion with the guns firing, ships blowing up, ships returning fire and ending up with a couple of those big guns (and the buildings) getting blown to bits =) Thanks for the fun, great work!
